Gengar often runs shadow ball and/or explosion in gen 3 doubles. Shadow ball gengar hits other gengars
I knew all this except the explosion part, what do you mean by 'it has the opponents defence' for explosion?? Which gen is that?

lowk though why did they even do that gengar used to be the only ghost type so why in the world would they make ghost moves physical? Unless im forgetting someone i think the gengar line was the only ghost types in gen 1

Real pokemon games start at génération 4. Playing without the split feels impossible , very clanky today
In the original gold and silver Gengar with the punches could devastate the elite four and the champion. The only pokemon who does it better in that game than Gengar is Alakazam.

Gengar was a elemental ghost I don’t even think he could be hit with physical damage

I like Gen 3 the most, because it had abilities, but was before the physical special split. The split completely ruined pokemon like Metagross, that now have a useless special stat because psychic was special and special only in gen 3, but now you can just use zen headbutt. Gen 4 was the first true power creep in the series, and basically neutered a lot of gen 1, 2, and 3 mons in favor of more specialized/minmaxed pokemon. There's a reason the incredibly minmaxed Snorlax is the only non-mega 1st gen pokemon to win worlds, much less do it THREE TIMES.

Not just Shadow Ball, but Sludge Bomb as well in Gen 3. Sneasel had the opposite problem too, with it's Dark & Ice stabs both being special for a physical attacker, really restricting it to use normal attacks like Slash.

I actually don't care what any of you say pokemon sprites peaked in gen 2
man i still think the physical special split is easily the greatest mechanic ever introduced. The amount of pokemon/moves it saved is mind boggling and i feel like i hear a new one every time they talk about it. It not being in prior gens always keeps me from replaying them (especially 3). It really is why gen 4 is by far my favourite and is the first game to feel like a true video game.
To this day, Ghost moves being all physical makes me irrationally annoyed.
The literal defining trait of ghosts is a lack of a physical body.
I don’t know why—when certain types were tied to an attack type—ghost type moves would ever be physical
