I think this is a situation of poltergeist activity being paused by a person, specifically Shirley. Not a ghost.
Most of the poltergeist activity reports I know of tend to occur around young women, during a period of significant stress or family issues. I wouldn't be surprised if poltergeist activity is a manifestation of emotions. I would love to see more research done on poltergeist activity.

I’m a believer, but Shirley sounds insane. And if “donald” were real, he sounds like a kook. No way he was a prince in life. His writings were far too crude as a prince would have had much better education.

Wonder why these poltergeist start suddenly and last just over a decade fade to nothing? Almost all got things in common. More I see and think about it I think people are it's source.Could certain type of Psychics when young unknowingly start out this way?
I wonder if the adopted brother/step brother did something grisly to Shirley and therefore wants to distance himself as far off from the story and family as possible and hence why the grandmother was essentially victim blaming Shirley for her mental anguish and coping with the "prince"….thats my hunch if Shirley was indeed the cause of the hauntings….if this was purely supernatural however then maybe its a spectre of some orphaned/workhouse kid from the 1800s or a servant to the french/english monarchy that lied about who he was multiple times to look cool and to have power hes never had before…I could easily see power going to someone in Victorian povertys head FAST, plus there are half-truths like maybe Shirley reminded him of someone from his past life snd therefore became attached….sorry for rambling but this experience is very intriguing once you try to take into account the unaccounted for aspects
