About Poltergeist:
A typical family in a quiet suburb of a normal California faces a frightening ordeal when its home is invaded by a Poltergeist. Late one night, 10-year-old Carol Anne Freeling (Heather O’Rourke) hears a voice coming from inside the television set … At first, the spirits that invade the Freeling’s home seem like playful children. But then they turn angry. And when Carol Anne is pulled from this world into another, Steve and Diane Freeling (Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams–In the Land of Women) turn to an exorcist (Zelda Rubinstein) in this horror classic from director Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre films) and producer and screenwriter Steven Spielberg.

  1. Growing up we lived in a daylight basement home which the backyard butted up against a large and dense, creepy forest. We played there during the day, but at night no one would venture into it's pitch black darkness, as mysteriously spooky it was. In 1983ish, at 11 or 12 years old, while sick and home from school, alone, i made the mistake of watching this movie on HBO. I managed to absolutely terrify myself. Although it doesn't scare me now as an adult, like it did then, the movie has always given me the creeps. Exceedingly well-made, Spielberg created another masterpiece in this film.

  2. Seen this movie so many times since my teens I’ve almost memorized the opening credits, so up until a few years ago I thought Zelda was Beatrice Straight (in the video) I thought she looked like a Beatrice,no disrespect

  3. Zelda Rubinstein won a well-deserved Oscar this year (1983) for Best Supporting Actress. I remember seeing this in the movie theater even thought it was rated R. If it was rated R, we would make sure we saw it!

  4. This movie could easily be one of the top 10 ever made, IMHO. I saw it around 7 or 8 years old when it was broadcast on HBO and instantly was hooked. It made me want to move to Southern California and live in a tract house. 😊

  5. Another thing I never understood was there was reference in the movie to Carol Anne being born in that house… and that seened to have something to do with why she was abducted. But do they mean Diane literally gave birth to her IN THE HOUSE?

  6. That the horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genres have been overlooked by major awards for anything other than technical merit is such a travesty. This movie’s performances should have earned notices. JoBeth Williams minimally should have been nominated for best actress. You believed this was a real family in supernatural crisis, which made it more terrifying than all the special effects combined.

  7. The scariest part of this film was realising that these were not random spirits running around because they were confused about being dead, but that there was an actual plot; an unspeakable evil that intentionally used Carol-Anne's life force to keep the spirits away from the light so that their continuous frustrations would manifest within the house and wreak chaos on the Freeling family. The Beast used her to weaponise the collective power of the unrested souls to gain hold over the realm of the living. This wasn't some random haunting, a spectre calculated this entire plan for unknown reason.
