Gaming references in The Binding Of Isaac Explained

In the last video, where I explained religious references in the binding of I
Isaac, I saw some people asking for another similar video, so I made one explaining and listing most of the gaming references I could find, and there’s quite a few of them, from Mario to Tomb Raider, Castlevania and other of Edmund’s games. Hope you enjoy it!

  1. On the wiki, it says holy mantle is a reference to an mtg card of the same name, but given the card came out less than a year before rebirth and would be the only card reference from a recent set, it’s highly unlikely

  2. IIRC the story of the player who ripped up their Chaos Orb ended in disqualification, not because of the play but because their deck no longer met the 60 card minimum for a legal deck lol

  3. The banning of Chaos Orb and similar cards from Magic is also due to a couple other reasons, its unfair fot people with low hand mobility or poor sight to have to aim and trow a card from a distance, also it would encourage players to just play the game with cards separated by comically large distances. Its a horrible card design, but also a huge part of Magic early history

  4. Iirc, the magic player that ripped up a chaos orb didn't instantly win, but rather was disqualified because his deck list no longer matched what was submitted

  5. fun fact about the gnawed leaf is both a reference of SMB3 Tanuki Leaf while the Item Sprite is almost identical to the leafs from Animal Crossing which are housing items

  6. Not exactly a reference, but my sister was watching me play Fallout 4 a while back and said that one of the Junktown Jerky Vendor books reminded her of the Binding of Isaac. Namely, “Why I sold my mother”.

  7. There's a bunch of references to The End is Nigh(another Edmund Mcmillen game) that you missed:

-When ???/Blue Baby picks up the Ball of Tar, his appearance looks nearly identical to Ash, the main protagonist of The End is Nigh.

-Similarly, when Delirium turns into Steven, he also resembles Ash.

-The Fissure enemies that appear in Downpour are taken directly from TEiN.

-The Mr. Mine enemy is a possible reference to the Crunch enemies in TEiN

-The Dank Charger's behavior is the exact same as the Charger enemies in TEiN.

-The Grudge enemies references the Crushers in TEiN.

-The Floast variant of the Host gets its name from an enemy in TEiN, and also look similar.

-The Morningstar Enemies in Gehenna very closely resemble the Ferals in TEiN.

  8. Related to the Black Lotus bit: There are quite a few people who are very upset with Wizards for reprinting the Black Lotus and tanking the value of a First Edition version. Mostly, it's the "investors" who banked on its value remaining stable. The majority of people I see talking about it are loving watching those people lose their life savings investing in a piece of cardstock.

If you've got old MTG cards, just play with them. That's what they're for.

  9. -The Mr. Mega item gives Isaac a similar appearance to Bomberman, and Bomber Boy gives him the little stud with a pink ball on his head.

-Expansion Pack is probably a reference to the N64 Expansion Pak accesory.

-Teardrop Charm is probably a reference to the Pokémon Mystic Water held item.

-Rocket in a Jar is a reference to the Missile Expansions from the Metroid series.

-The Cartridge trinket is a NES game cartridge.

-Booster Pack is a reference to those packages of 5 or so cards sold on stores for differente card games, and Starter Deck is a references to premade decks sold to new players that want to get into a card game.

-The More Options item is probably a reference to the iconic Super Mario Bros Question Mark Blocks.

-Spiked Chests are most likely a reference to Mimic Chest founds in all sorts of fantasy games and setings.

-The four original characters, Isaac, Maggie, Cain and Judas, where somewhat based on the original DnD's classes, with Isaac being the Warrior, Maggie the Cleric, Cain the Thief, and Judas the Mage.

-Pay to Win is a reference to those games, usually online games, that give huge advantages to players who spend a lot of money on the game, leaving the players who doesn't spend anything in an unfair disadvantage.

-Blue Candle, Red Candle, Treasure Map, Compass, Step Ladder and Boomerang are all references to items from the orignal Legend of Zelda; and the MEAT! item looks close enough to the Meat item in Legend of Zelda that I would count it as a reference as well.

-Portable Slot, as well as the Slot Machines, Crane Games, Shell and Hell games, and Poker Chip being all references to different gambling games.

-I don't really know if you can count the next one as gaming but, the aces and 2 of spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds, alongside Suicide King, Queen of hearts, Ace of Spades trinket, the Suicide King challenge and the Joker card are all references to different card games the use the French card deck such as Poker and Black Jack. With Poker chip being a quite obvious reference to Poker itself.

    -Also, G-Fuel is… a thing, definitely

  10. 2:22 I am pretty sure the Gnawed Leaf is not only a reference to the Tanuki Leaf Power Up from Mario but also and rather mainly a reference to the Item Leaf from Animal Crossing while the Tail Isaac gets, when picking it up the item, could be a reference to Tom Nook (the shop keeper and many things more in the Animal Crossing Games) and the invincebility effect that changes Isaacs looks to that hollow statue looks very similar to the Gyroids also from Animal Crossing. And the fact that the Item is called Gnawed Leaf and looks nearly identical to the Leaf Logo from Animal Crossing, which is the inventory icon for every normal kind of furniture since the first game. Also that the invicabilty is only activated by standing still is kind of a hint to that since furniture isn't supposed to move by their own.

  11. More context on TMTRAINER and why it behaves like that in the game.

TMTRAINER is not a simple glitch is know as a super glitch that can and will do a massive corruption on the hexadecimal code of the game, it can corrupt data from one or two buffers depending of what are you doing.

In isaac the effect is particularly the same, all items gets "corrupted" and begin to malfunction.

Fun fact. TMTRAINER is a glitch that some people are studying even today, they have managed to even make stable corruptions to get pokemons above lv100 or with absurd stats also TMTRAINER gives you access to super glitch and semi-super glitch moves that can do a lot of things. Is a glitch really complex with a tons of variations and effects and this is well referenced in Isaac

  12. Challenge 9 demo man is most likely a team fortress 2 reference cus of the class with the same name, its general theme with explosives, and the fact that its unlock paper simply shows a hat (TF2 is well known for all the hats if offers).
Going on with tf2, the soul of Judas' description "right behind you" is a quote from the Spy.

random fun fact. There's a co op baby that is a Deployer from the Minecraft Create mod

  13. Im pretty sure berserk is mostly a reference to samson in general
But also that special doom power up also shows up in paint the town red as the second ability you can use

  14. theres some more TloZ items like Red and Blue candle, Ladder, Boomerang, Map and Compass, Stopwatch and Golden Key. theres also some enemies that are refs to tloz enemies like Chub being Dodongo, Pin and Lanmola, and the Haunt being like Giant Ghini

  15. You missed the videogame reference of Decap Attack which references the 1991 Sega Genesis platformer with the name being the same and the main character of said game throwing his head to attack
The Boomerang, red candle, compass, map and ladder all reference the original NES Legend of Zelda, the Champion's Belt visually resembles the power bracelet from several 2D Zelda games while Mom's Bracelet functions like the power bracelet
