I have been in abandoned villages in catholic countries where almost every building is or on the verge of collapsing except, and you guessed it already, for the churches. They were locked and fairly good maintained, the catholics feel obligated to take care of their churches even though nobody comes there anymore, except for the ones doing the maintenance of course.

They can be influenced but they can't be spiritually possessed so any land that was consecrated gets a very similar treatment where there can't be a devil in the presence of a god
