Classic Black Death Metal Comp 90s – Witchhunter Records

Around 1988 in Zürich Switzerland, Witchhunt Records was founded and run by Peter Jäger. Especially until the mid 1990s, Witchhunt Records was mainly releasing debut EP’s and LP’s for unsigned bands like Anathema, Phlegethon, Sinister & Bluuurgh , while Peter was running his shop and distributing records and merch for bigger labels around the world from home. In 1995 Peter registered Witchhunt Records and launched his Metalshop “Trauma” which lasted until 2013. Since then, Peter pretty much left the scene.

Peter was always into experimental, avant-garde and progressive type of (death) metal which can be seen in pretty much all of his releases. He also didn’t mind Christian lyrics and released Paramæcium – Exhumed Of The Earth, a now classic death/doom metal release easily able to keep up with giants like diSEMBOWELMENT, Dusk or Evoken. With Belial – 3, Peter started to engage in non-metal releases as well.

Some by now classic 7”s and the two now legendary compilations Various – Annihilation Of The Antichrist & Various – Believe In Church And Agonize helped Witchhunt records to gain cult status among old school death metal fans and veterans. However, his taste in unique and experimental metal was not shared by the broader community and most of the bands that were released by Witchhunt records and the label itself, faded pretty much into obscurity.
