History of the Dark Type | Pokémon

In Generation 2, the Dark Type was introduced (alongside the Steel Type) to balance Pokemon after the domination of the Psychic Type in Generation 1. In this video, you’ll learn about the history of the Dark Type, including type matchups, Pokémon introduced, type specialists, and more.

READ BEFORE WATCHING: Due to a stupid oversight on my part, when discussing move attributes (like power, accuracy, etc), I only looked at the attributes for the most recent generation. Please check the comment section to see corrections that some viewers have pointed out. If you spot any other mistakes, please let me know in the comments!

  1. Hello everyone, I'd like to call your attention to an error that I have made that several viewers have pointed out (rightfully so). When I was discussing moves added in each generation, I erroneously stated the value of the power, accuracy, and other attributes of the moves. Essentially, I was only looking at the numbers for the most recent generation the move appeared in, failing to consider that these attributes might have been higher or lower when the move was introduced (for example, Game Freak nerfed some dark type moves). Some specific examples include Knock Off and Dark Void. This was an unintentional oversight, but nonetheless a stupid mistake that I should have caught. I highly encourage you to check out some of the specific corrections that viewers have made in this comment section.

I also want to take some time to thank viewers that have pointed out this mistake. I value constructive criticism immensely, and I am very happy that the people watching this video not only recognized these mistakes, but also took the time to leave a comment explaining the mistake and providing a correction. I'd also like to thank people for being kind while doing so (honestly, I don't mind it as much if you are mean to me as long as you aren't mean to other commenters, but I do appreciate it!). While I will work harder to make sure I do not make mistakes, I am not perfect. Please, do not hesitate to call any other mistakes out that I have made, both in the past and in the future.

If there are any other mistakes that you have recognized in this video, please respond to this comment and let me know. Thank you!

  2. If you're doing a chronological history of moves, it'd be better if you described the moves' effects at the time of introduction. Otherwise, you may mislead people into thinking that moves like Knock Off and Dark Void had always worked the way they do now.

  3. The Pokémon move assurance was introduced in Gen IV with a base attack of 50. It got buffed to base attack of 60 in Gen VI.
The Pokémon move sucker punch was introduced in Gen IV with a base attack of 80. It got reduced to base attack of 70 in Gen VII.

  4. Another suggestion or two: If you’re gonna go through a 3-line. Rather than saying “evolution” twice, why not just say “evolutions” once.
For example; “Impidimp, and it’s evolutions Morgrem and Grimmsnarl”

And for the other suggestion: If the move in its debut gen was formerly a signature move, say this “Darkest Lariat, which was formerly the signature move of Incineroar” or “Incineroar’s former signature move, Darkest Lariat”

  5. Here’s a suggestion: You should also point out how many brand new dual-typings of a given type were introduced in a given gen, past the type’s debut gen

Ex; “Gen 5 introduced an astonishing 4 brand new dual-typings for Dark” and if the typing was new say something like this “The new Ground/Dark typing”

Bonus points if they’re ever eventually paired with the entire type chart at some point (Water and Flying in gen 6, and more recently Grass, Electric, Fighting, and Dark in gen 9)

  6. I hate to be that guy, but how much research has been put into this video? 😅 The amount of misinformation present, especially in the first half, is staggering. Nice editing though 😃

  7. Dark is one of the coolest, least annoying/toxic/problematic types ever; so it just baffles my mind as to why fairy is resistant to and super effective against it – when if anything, I feel they should be super effective against each other.
The only thing I can think of is that too much weak, but very vocal fans complained about how strong Hydreigon and how hard gen 5 was in total and the TPC caved.

The Dark type should get a unique status called "Pain" which could make the one inflicted by it more susceptible to status condition other than confuse; randomly cause it to flinch; or randomly lower speed, attack, special defense or special attack for 4 turns but make it so Dark and Sound moves get a boost.

  8. Very good video but not perfect .. The reason is cus you dident mention the true power of moves as it was in gen they are created , for example you said thief is 60 power in gen 2 but nope is 40 and knock off you said is 65 but it is 20 in gen 3.. I suggest to you for the next videos like this one to say the power of the moves how they was and to say that this move changes later.. besides that your video was very good !

  9. Dark type being a Special type back in gen 2 and 3 is curious, when you consider attacks like bite and crunch.
While that, Ghost type was physical and the move I most remeber of them is Shadow Ball.

  10. Drapion has a really cool design and poison dark is a good typing but, if they made it bug dark I think it would have stood out more and would’ve served as aaron’s ace much better

  11. I’ll never forget being 8 years old, catching an abra outside of goldenrod, teaching it all the elemental punch TMs and completely plowing through the entire game only to be absolutely demolished by Karen’s houndoom.

  12. Hot take on the dark type: Out of the 3 weakness of Dark being Fighting Bug and Fairy Bug makes the least sense now in gens 2-5 i can forgive the bug weakness for gameplay balance but sence Gen 6 Introduced the Fairy type i think Dark should drop the bug weakness and only be weak to Fighting and Fairy. And why i bring this up? Because in Japan The Dark Type is called the Evil type and Evil being weak to bug doesn't make much sense because wouldn't villains embrace bugs?
