If ghosts are supposed to be the echo of the dead then they would out number the living and having no concrete evidence of ghosts then balance of probability tells me they do not exist but humans like to give reason for everything.
I get a proper unusual feel when i go in to old ruins etc. … .. Because when you enter an castle for an example, then you realize maybe hundreds or thousands of people died there.. That feel of awe and curiosity i get is not something i encounter everyday.
Ghost on the other hand are probably a stupid idea by someone who can't accept death..

Ghosts are demons (fallen angels) impersonating the dead. Why? To what end? They want you to think that there is immediately soul life after death. Why? To discredit God and the bible…to disqualify you from Heaven. But the bible is clear. Over 90 times the bible says when you die, you enter a dreamless sleep…to awaken when Jesus Christ comes back to judge the world. Question: did Lazarus who was dead three days say to Christ 'hey what the? I was happy in Heaven!' Or 'thanks for saving me from hell!' Answer: No. He continued as he left off before he died. what if ghosts are aliens, think about it, are scenes are limited and the universe is not.
In my opinion all living entity's including plants and single cell organisms excluding viruses and diseases unless they are all hitters ghost have an eternal energy. The body in which it resides is just a vessel for it to travel, so when you pass on you if lucky to do so move on to another vessel be it plant animal or new born baby if there is no vessel or you choose not to occupy one they your in the 'limbo' stage up until the point you choose or have a vessel available (reincarnation) that is just my belief as without such a thing life becomes utterly pointless, when you think about it seriously what is the point in an animal, any animal it's born eats, sleeps, shits, breeds and dies. It doesn't go to work it may not have what we call a meaningful relationship and has 0 worth unless we use it for food or clothing. On the same point we eat shit, sleep, breed and die but we go to work we build things for the next generation plod along from day 1 to death with a profound thought of self worth but realistically we have no meaning or purpose l, so by taking away all religions and beliefs in ghosts, reincarnation, spiritual entity and all that jazz were merely meat sacks carrying bacteria culture from one place to the next up until a point where we cease to exist as we are and spill the culture everywhere. Sorry for the rant but it's my opinion

I totally agree that, as you stated it, if there are spirits, then they are in every living beings, some people even believe they are in everything. Well, we know that is true, for motorcycles at least, right?
And if you are going to pick such a topic, of course you will get involved with religion and such, after all ghosts are in almost every religion i know. Especially in shamanism.
