The Black Phone is a 2021 American supernatural horror film[3] directed by Scott Derrickson from a screenplay he wrote with C. Robert Cargill, based on the 2004 short story by Joe Hill. It stars Mason Thames as Finney, a teenage boy abducted by a serial child killer known colloquially as the Grabber (Ethan Hawke). When Finney encounters a mystical black rotary phone in captivity, he uses it to plot his escape by communicating with the ghosts of the Grabber’s slain victims. Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone also feature in the principal cast. Derrickson and Cargill produced The Black Phone in association with Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum. Universal Pictures oversaw the film’s commercial distribution, and funding was sourced through a pact with Blumhouse and tax subsidies from the North Carolina state government.

  1. I really enjoyed this movie and can't wait to see the new one. You said in the beginning that this looks like the 50's, this is definitely the 70s. Secondly, seeing fights at school was somewhat of a common thing, not like it was everyday but at least ever week to two weeks, you had to learn to either take care of yourself or stick up for your friends that couldn't, funny thing was, we ended up being really good friends with people that we had fights with.
I'm glad that you picked up on the fact that both of the kids has powers / abilities, for some reason a lot of people don't really pick up on this. Overall a great movie!

  2. Outside of the powerful story, I love that this was set in 1978. As someone who didn't grow up in that era, it gives the film a more gritty, uneasy tone

I think when modern horror films are set several generations before, younger people are unsure of the technology or the social standards of the time. It adds an extra layer to the horror

  3. I've got to say that Scott Derrickson it's one of the best horror directors we have in our generation, you should definitely check "Sinister", Ethan Hawke nails it there, it's so scary but so good and tough to watch the first time

  4. Great reaction mary and i agree Ethan Hawke was terrifying as the grabber, the man is definitely a very good actor. I gotta disagree though about wanting to know his motive. Cause to quote scream " it's a lot scarier when there's no motive". This scary cherry has been great so far and I'm looking forward to the rest of the reactions.

  5. Mary, look at u wanting to find out what makes a kidnapping, murdering , pedo tick!🤔

    Great pick for Scary Cherry!😊

The child actors & Ethan Hawk were great in this. But, Madeleine McGraw "Gwen" stole the show for me.Gwen was a little spitfire.😄

U should feel lucky not to witness or get into fights like those depicted in this movie. The year this movie takes place 1978, I was in either kindergarten or 1st grade, & about 1 or 2 years from my very 1st fight. Most of my fights were w/boys because they were such little a-holes. They liked to pick on/bully me until I fought back. U would think that they would have left me alone w/me being one of the tallest kids in the entire school & a girl.

I'll give u an example of a fight I was in. When I was 10yrs old in 5th grade, we had a substitute teacher. He was an older man w/thick glasses & hearing aides in both ears. Not caring to go over any lesson plans, he assigned everyone a letter of the alphabet, & to copy from a dictionary every word that began w/ur assigned letter & its definition. I was lucky because I got a letter that didn't have too many words. I finished early. I raised my hand & asked what we do if we finished. The teacher just said he didn't care as long as I was quiet. So, I began to draw. A classmate, who was seated to my right & back a row, softly called to me. "Lynette, hey, Lynette!"
I turned to look at him. "How about u do the rest of these for me?"
"No, I'm not gonna do ur work for u." I answered, then facing forward.
    "Come on," he said.
Not bothering to turn around, I shook my head & repeated. "No!"
"Man, why do u have to be such a bitch?!"
I looked back scowling at him, & then I flipped him off. After that, I faced forward again. As I returned to my drawing, There was a flash of light & an explosion of pain on the right side of my face. I felt my glasses fly off & heard them skittering across the floor. I blinked from the shock of it turned to see the guy sauntering back to his desk w/this grin on his face. I faced forward again scanning the floor for my glasses. I saw them 2 rows ahead & slightly to the left, next to the foot of a female classmate. I think I finally took a breath, & then got up to collect my glasses. As I bent to pick them up, the female classmate said, "U ain't gonna let him get away w/that, are u?"
Snatching my glasses from the ground, I slowly stood up & said. "Nope!" I went to my desk & placed my glasses neatly on my desk. This whole time rage was bubbling up inside of me. I walked over to the boy who blind-sided me w/a punch to the face,& began whaling on him. He sheilded himself w/his arms, & kept trying to get out of his desk seat, but I kept knocking him back down. On his 4th attempt he finally gained his feet. He grabbed hold of the front of my shirt shoving me backwards into desks, including my own. I latched my hands onto his arms so I wouldn't fall without taking him w/me. He tried to get his arm loose to hit me again, but he couldn't so he pushed me into the heating unit in the back of the class. Using all my strength, I whipped him around slamming him into the heating unit. By this time the class was chaos. Students were out of their desks, shouting, "Kick his ass! Kick his ass!"
Finally, the substitute teacher yelled out. "That's enough, both of u! Break it up, right now!" We separated giving each other one last shove. We got sent to the principal's office about 5 mins apart. I needed to stop by the nurse's office for an ice pack because the right side of my face started to swell. We both ended up w/a 3 day "vacation" suspension. So, yeah, school fights can be that brutal.

  6. Madeleine McGraw, Gwen's actress, absolutely destroyed her role. Her acting is the highlight of the movie for me and I think she deserves way more recognition for it. Curious if she's in the sequel, I'll be seeing that soon

  7. With the part of him supposedly at work, I interpreted it as he was at the other house digging the grave that the cops found. So him conveniently coming back was really him coming back to finish "the game".

  8. My grandfather had dogs sicced on him as a child, forcing him to climb utility poles and he is only maybe 4% black at most. It wasn't about race. It was the Catholic caste system as it exists in lands in which they are predominant.
