The Last Witch Hunter

The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including KAULDER, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful QUEEN WITCH, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the QUEEN curses KAULDER with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today KAULDER is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to KAULDER, the QUEEN WITCH is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race.

  2. I have no memory of this movie coming out, back in 2015. (Of course, that was a very tumultuous year for me, as it turned out, so it was likely my own fault.) This is the first time I've seen it, and I actually had no idea of what it was about, never having read anything about it.

I read through the comments after the movie, though, and I see that the film was not a huge hit–although moviegoers liked it more than critics. I did a little research to find out what the movie's perceived problems were. Critics thought the pace of the movie was plodding, the story confused, and the exposition took up too much of what they thought of as an action movie.

Well, I'm a person who likes to take a movie as it is intended, not how I might like it re-written and judge it from there. I enjoyed the movie. The only thing I found confusing was that I didn't immediately recognize Vin Diesel when he was playing Kaulder in the flashbacks! They really did a good job of making him look like a medieval warrior.

I also read that people didn't like the CGI. These days, anytime a movie is going to have special effects, it's likely to be CGI. That's just something you have to expect, and to object that it was "overdone" or "not good enough" just strikes me as nitpicking. One of the main stars of the movie is magic; if they had minimized the special effects, people would have complained about that! I thought they were fine.

When the movie was done, I wanted to know more. Which I think is an indication of a good movie! I wanted to explore a lot more of a world in which there was a battle between magic users taking place and most of humanity was unaware. I also think an immortal protagonist (Highlander style!) can be very interesting, since we could relive past eras through his memories. It's a shame they didn't consider making it a series on Netflix or something like that.

  3. Expected so many “when’s the next one?” All we ever got was fast and furious everything else… even chronicles of Riddick, didn’t go chronicle… much, they did do a cartoon prequel but still never tied that in much, ran outta of money and said F it let’s hire a cartoonist! 💁🏻‍♂️ love all his movies though! 🫶
