The Mothman legend began in the 1960s with a series of sightings and encounters reported by residents of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and the surrounding area.
Every year, thousands of tourists descend on Point Pleasant in September for the Mothman Festival, hoping to catch a glimpse of the big guy and his glowing red eyes. This year, I was among them.

Despite a lack of credible sightings since the ‘60s, Mothman continues to capture the imagination of people in West Virginia and beyond. I wanted to figure out why. I quickly learned that there’s so much more to this story than just looking for creepy cryptids.

In 1967, the Silver Bridge (which connected Point Pleasant to Gallipolis, Ohio) collapsed during rush hour. Forty six people were killed, and Mothman was never seen in Point Pleasant again.

I’m from WV originally and don’t live far from there still…been to the Mothman fest several times but 2023 was the last one I attended. It’s gotten too crowded for me! The legend is cool though. Growing up in WV, everyone always knew, even as a kid, about the Silver Bridge collapse and then the Mothman, Men in Black, etc. Pt. Pleasant is an odd place though. Kinda … 🫤
