If Hot Topic Made an Anime! – Witch Hunter Robin Review!

For this Halloween season, let’s watch a classic 2000’s Anime, Witch Hunter Robin! I came into this expecting Witch Hunting. What I got was gothic angst and 2000’s gothic punk nostalgia. If Hot Topic made an Anime, it would be Witch Hunter Robin! Let me show you why with this review. Happy Halloween!

  1. What a great tone piece. Unlike the other go-to tone piece of that era, Wolf's Rain, I actually finished it (and bought the Anime Legends imprint DVD set). While I didn't like Ergo Proxy, Shukou Murase has, I think, proven himself at being adept with the more noir-flavored works. Genocidal Organ was a solid film and I'm glad he got a chance at directing a Gundam film that, thankfully, did not turn out to be totally insufferable.

He's very clearly an animator and character designer before a storyboard artist, and while I personally have offered mixed reception to works directed by such people, Murase's aesthetic of choice is something I truly enjoy. Again, setting a tone and oozing atmosphere are the goals here. What helps is that they're usually coupled with hearty amounts of silence interspersed with introspection and, at least in this series, decent music. I like Taku Iwasaki :D.

  2. And anime of my childhood? Well, if it is in watching order, then: Mitsubachi Maaya no Bouken (1975), Uchuusen Sagittarius (1986), Candy, Candy (1976), Nanatsu no Umi no Tico (1994), Sailor Moon (1993), Ranma 1/2 (1989).
Later, at highschool it was Azumanga Daioh, Haibane Renmei (2002), Hikaru no Go (2001), Naruto (2002), Meitantei Conan (1995), Slayers (1995), Tenkuu no Escaflowne (1996), Hunter x Hunter (1999), Juuni Kokki (2002), Full Metal Panic (2002), Figure17: Tsubasa & Hikaru (2001), Ayashi no Ceres (2000), Ojamajo Doremi (1999), Card Captor Sakura, Dragonballs/Z and Fushigi no Umi no Nadia (1991), Hellsing TV (2001), Love Hina (2000).
In my young adult years came the true otaku stage and first con visit in Brno (Animefest 2004) and lot more excellent anime like Aria the Animation (2005), Kare Kano, Kino no Tabi, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Ouran Koukou Host Club, Paradise Kiss, Yamato Nadesico Shichi Henge, Elf o Karu Mono-tachi, Uchuu no Stellvia, Yu Yu Hakushou, Rurourni Kenshin (Tsuyoku Hen!), Samurai Champloo, Hellsing Ultimate, Little Witch Academia.

  3. 3:31 Oh yeah, I can definitely remember these times. I mean I was born in '98 right around these eras, so I lived through it all. I may not be able to remember it all, but boy howdy, were these shows, music genres, and movies my jam growing up. Still are today too.

By the way, I'm surprised you didn't use the Angel or Buffy theme songs in the Insanimania clips. Those songs were lit for their times. Another clip I would have recommended for you in that clip show: Something from the movie "The Craft". It was from the late nineties (about the same time I was born and it starred Neve Campbell, the future Scream Queen), but it was a movie about witches practicing their shtick. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it as they have an actual wiccan as part of the main cast of characters and she was able to provide the director so much insight into the whole world of Wiccan culture.

10:43 Also, I'm not gonna be surprised if Witch Hunter Robin gains a cult following years from now because of reviewers like you bringing back the memories for the people who watched it back then.

  4. Yeah i remember this awesome series. I looked for a movie or manga after it was over…i didn't find a damn thing. I was so disappointed ☹️ i wanted more. And i hate, absolutely hate open endings. I don't want to guess what will happen. If that's the case, i could've stopped watching after episode 3 & just guess what will happen next.

  5. I got the box set back then, it came with a shirt. I think it's still around here somewhere. My boss is the only other person I know who knows about this amazing show…and I'm always a sucker for Crispin Freeman!

  6. Ergo proxy and witch hunter robin…two of my favorite anime of all time. Perfect mature tone, great music, amazing atmosphere…it's just amazing. Netflix make a witch hunter robin and ergo proxy season 2 I beg you!

  7. Oh yeah and true story also used to see this back when I was still in college and an actual student in what is named Saddleback Community in an anime club I went and also it was the early 2000's or in the first years when it was made not like today either. Really times have changed.

  8. Is it bad that I know that character from the Winx Club Halloween episode The Fourth Witch? One of the people at the party is dressed up like her. Also totally not the reason I clicked on this vid
